This blog is intended to be a place for ASKT staff and volunteers to share stories, tutoring strategies and resources. At least once a week, a member of the ASKT staff will post a blog here. Volunteer tutors (and anyone else interested in children's literacy) are invited to post comments here as well.

Name: All-Star Kids Tutoring

Location: Around Maricopa County, Arizona

All-Star Kids Tutoring (ASKT) brings the community together to foster literacy skills in children. Since 1996, ASKT has provided free of charge, one-on-one volunteer literacy tutoring to elementary school students struggling to master basic reading skills. The ASKT program partners with Title I elementary schools throughout the Valley in order to provide students, identified by their teachers as behind their grade level in reading, with additional assistance. ASKT recruits, trains and supports community volunteers who tutor and mentor one student for the duration of the school year. In the libraries of partner schools around the Valley, groups of approximately 15 tutor and student pairs meet the same day each week for 90 minutes. Each meeting includes an hour of one-on-one tutoring, a healthy snack and drink break, and a literacy related group activity. ASKT also supports children's literacy by working with students' families and providing them with home libraries.
